It’s January 22, 2010 – 10 days after the earthquake. Earlier in the day, the parents were united with their children in the airport in Miami.

They all began their preparations for the trip home. 14 of the families were coming back to Grand Rapids Michigan and doing so via private planes. I spent a good bit of time during that day in contact with both Northern Air and the Amway people. We ended up being able to coordinate things so that both planes would land and go to the same hangar. That way everyone could be able to see everyone at the same place.

The people at Northern Air were fantastic to work with. They moved the families cars over to the Amway facility and it was truly a pleasure working with them and with the Amway people.

About 2:00, we found out that both planes were on there way and would be arriving in Grand Rapids between 5 and 6 pm (or so). So, I picked my kids up from school and told them that we were going to go to the airport to welcome home a bunch of the kids at GLA. My youngest said, “Is Mom coming home?” “Nope, Mom needs to help Dixie some more yet.” My next older (also Haitian) said, “I don’t want to go.” “Too bad, you’re going. You don’t have to enjoy it but you have to go and you have to behave.”

And he did………
