Psalm 40:4 (The Message)  “Blessed are you who give yourselves over to God, turn your backs on the world’s “sure thing,” ignore what the world worships;”

To me, there are three important thoughts in this verse…..

Give yourself over to God – That doesn’t imply a partial surrender, that doesn’t mean believe in God but live like your neighbors.    It means total surrender.   To follow what King David is saying, you need to give 100% of yourself and your beliefs and your actions over to God.

Turn your backs on the world’s “sure thing.”   All you have to do is spend 10 minutes on social media and I can guarantee you that you’ll find at least 1 if not more companies or people who are guaranteeing you “a better retirement” or “better sleep” or 6 steps guaranteed to help you stop smoking.    These are just a few examples of the word’s sure thing.    Now I’m not saying don’t exercise or don’t take care of your body – but God is saying that we need to turn our backs on the materialistic “sure thing” that the world pushes at you.

Ignore what the world worships.  From what I’ve read, when LeBron James came back to Ohio, it was very close to a ceremonial worshipping of “King LeBron.”   Don’t do that.   The guy is an awesome basketball player, from what I’ve read, he seems like a straight up type of person and does a lot of good.   But don’t worship him.    Don’t worship what the world does.   As a matter of fact, ignore it.

As I’m writing this, I’m thinking that these are some of the reasons that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. can be dangerous.   If you see pictures that someone else posted about their “perfect” vacation in Hawaii, it’s tempting to say, dang, they went to Hawaii and I’m stuck here in Michigan where it’s 40 and rainy.

Social media can be a great way to tell your story, it can be a great way to reach out to others, to stay connected with people you hardly ever see.    But we need to constantly remind ourselves that what we’re seeing on Facebook is not or at least usually not the whole story.

So give yourself over to God, turn your back on the world and watch what God has planned for 2016 and beyond.
