30,000 Ft. Questions–Part 3–Emotional Toll

What difference will it make on the emotional make up of Haiti long term?

There is no way to truly quantify the impact of a devastating natural disaster like that, the sudden unexpected and massive loss of life, the disruption of families, the trauma of surviving, the trauma of seeing your government’s palace in shambles.

A few months ago, there was a very small (relatively speaking) earthquake in Haiti. I think it was like a 3.2 on the Richter scale. The reactions on social media showed that for many people it brought back, very strongly and very swiftly, fear of that night. People ran into the streets screaming and terrorized at the thought of it happening again. A strong indication of the fact that emotionally the scars were not terribly far below the surface.

I believe the emotional toll on Haiti and those who live in and care about Haiti will last a very long time.
